Winter Ahead (poem)

When I turn the heat on for the first time in October

The warmth reminds me of childhood and the loss

Of innocence. The atmosphere becomes close, safe—

The memory of love’s embrace and how a body

Never quite accepts being alone for the long winter

Ahead.
